Abstract
The increasing prevalence of artificial sweeteners in food and beverages has raised important questions regarding their potential interactions with pharmaceuticals. This study investigates how artificial sweeteners, including saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium, may alter the absorption kinetics of orally administered drugs. A combination of in vitro intestinal models, pharmacokinetic simulations, and clinical pilot studies were used to evaluate potential changes in drug absorption in the presence of artificial sweeteners. Our findings suggest that while some sweeteners exhibit negligible effects on the permeability of model drugs, others may modify transporter activity or alter gastrointestinal pH, thereby affecting drug bioavailability. These preliminary results underscore the necessity for further research into food–drug interactions in an era of widespread consumption of non-nutritive sweeteners.
