Abstract
The pursuit of optimized oral drug delivery systems has led researchers to explore edible biopolymers as carriers for sustained drug release. This study investigates the potential of various edible biopolymers—including chitosan, alginate, gelatin, and starch derivatives—to provide controlled drug release profiles when incorporated into oral medication formulations. A comprehensive literature review up to 2020 identified key trends and critical challenges in the field. Experimental formulations were developed using solvent casting and ionic crosslinking methods, followed by in vitro release studies. Additionally, a survey of pharmaceutical formulation experts provided insights into formulation preferences and market viability. Statistical analyses, including ANOVA and regression analysis, were applied to determine significant differences in drug release kinetics among formulations. The results indicate that select edible biopolymers can sustain drug release effectively while offering biocompatibility and ease of processing. The study concludes that further optimization and in vivo testing are warranted, potentially transforming oral medication delivery with enhanced patient compliance and therapeutic outcomes.
